The interrogation room felt like a walk-in freezer. The storm had passed, but the cold had sunk into the walls of the sheriff’s office, making everything—from the metal table to the cinderblock corners—echo with a brittle stillness. Avril sat gingerly, her ribs aching, her skin pale beneath harsh fluorescent light. A faint tremor in her hands betrayed how close she was to collapsing again, but she kept her jaw locked.
Deputy Lyle Benton stood against the wall with Ranger at his heel, both watching the man in the orange jumpsuit across the table.
